BookExpo - Day 1 (Tuesday): Sightseeing in NYC

The last week in May/first week of June, I spent the week in the city - for BookExpo!!! I was so excited it was back in NYC - this was my 3rd time going - I went in 2014, 2015, skipped 2016 when it moved to Chicago, and now I was attending again in 2017!

I was once again rooming with my blogging friend, Tamara from Traveling With T and I was excited to see her in person and catch up. It seems that BookExpo is the only time we get to see each other, though we chat virtually all the time and occasionally on the phone! This year, we had some friends to hang with: Rhiannon from Ivory Owl Reviews and Alison who is a marketing/media consultant.

I got to the city bright and early Tuesday morning - my husband had a meeting that morning in the city and I hitched a ride with him. I had time before the girls arrived, so after dropping my bags off at the hotel, I walked around for a few hours. I walked from the hotel to the Javits Center and then back and then around Times Square.

After the girls arrived and we checked in, we decided to go to the New York Public Library - somewhere I'd never been. Sure, I've walked by it, but I've never been inside. We decided to do our own tour and just roamed around the floors. There was this awesome librarian on the 3rd floor - the hairstyle she had - I didn't get a picture of her, but it was epic!

From there, we took a subway to The Highline. Alison had found a walking tour of the Highline that started at 6:30pm. We got down to where we thought we were supposed to be around 5, so we found a cute little wine bar to have a drink to kill some time - The Drunken Horse. We sat down to catch up - what was going on in our lives, what books we were excited about getting, what we were reading, etc.

Then we went off to find the tour on The Highline...except, we had misjudged where we needed to be and were no where near where near the tour started...so, we decided to just walk The Highline north towards our hotel, and I gave the tour, using the Friends of the Highline website...it was pretty funny, but the website is very informative and not too detailed!

Tamara, Alison, Me, & Rhiannon

After The Highline, we had a wonderful dinner at a charming Italian restaurant, Mama Mia - 44SW, just around the corner from our hotel. Oh my, so delicious, and the portions weren't too big! We did a lot of talking and laughing, all afternoon and evening - I just knew it was going to be  a good week!!!

 . . . Stay tuned for a recap of Day 2!
